Up and Through

In 2017 I visited my distant cousin’s vacation home in a tucked away village called La Boutiere in the southeast Laval region of France. He was up there in his years already but confidently led my family and I on a hike up a precarious mountain path. We were impressed with his stamina at the time, and also blown away by the scenery.

This series uses the path from the village below, through the forest and up the mountains as an allegory for leaving behind everything you know to explore what you want most.

Collection Details

The circular formatting of these paintings is meant to mimic the look and proportions of a circular polaroid photo, but enlarged and painted onto deckled edge paper. This created an exciting way to formally depict these images that evoked a tactile and nostalgic quality, as if we are looking through a portal into a memory. It’s a continuation of my interest in mimicking the experimental and unusual qualities of various forms of film photography through my watercolors.

As a full series, the images create a sequential and kinetic path journeying up the hiking path into the mountains. They function individually but also as parts of a larger story.
